"FIRST TIME WITH DIRECT FERRIES"
I was a bit unsure of what to expect on the overnight ferry from Caen to Portsmouth and was expecting an uncomfortable journey. How wrong I was! The ferry was very modern, fresh and clean and our cabin (for 4 people) was superb and cleverly designed. Shop, café and bar stayed open until after midnight and early breakfast was available at a reasonable price. The crossing was very smooth and we were all rested for our journey hoe to Suffolk. I cannot recommend Direct Ferries enough.

The city of Caen is located in the north west of France and is the largest city in Lower Normandy. The port city is located around 15 km inland from the English Channel coast and is around 2 hours by car from Paris, the French capital. There are a number of interesting things to see and do in the city. Caen's castle was built by William the conqueror in 1060 and is definitely worth a visit. The castle is one of the largest medieval castles in Western Europe and was handed to the French Crown in 1204. William the Conqueror is perhaps best known for conquering England in 1066!
for visitors seeking a more sedate way to pass the time then a visit to the Jardin Botanique de Caen is a must. It is a botanical garden and arboretum that contains more than 8,000 plant species.
The small port of Ouistreham serves Caen and lies at the mouth of the Caen Canal, at the point where it meets the English Channel. The ferry terminal is around 15 km from the city centre and there is a daytime bus service available for foot passengers. Ferry services operating from the port depart to Portsmouth, on the south coast of England.
The city of Portsmouth is located on the south coast of England in the county of Hampshire. The city, which lies on the English Channel coast, has a long and illustrious maritime history and has connections with the Royal Navy that goes back centuries. The city was also one of the world's greatest shipbuilding centres and constructed the world's first ever dry dock in the 15th century, which is still in use today. The city is still an important base for the Royal Navy and is home to a number of important historical ships including the crowning glory of Admiral Lord Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory.
Portsmouth was significantly bombed during the Second World War because of its strategic importance, and as a result the city is a mix of old and new buildings with some of the most historic areas being the Hard and the Point. The nearby suburb of Southsea is a popular destination for families and has a lovely stretch of beach, two piers and a good selection of bars, cafes, restaurants and a theme park at Clarence Pier.
Ferry services from the city's port depart to Le Havre, Bilbao, Cherbourg, Caen, St Malo, St Helier, St Peter Port and Ryde.
