Favignana is one of the three Aegadian Islands in southern Italy off the west coast of Sicily.
Favignana is shaped a bit like a butterfly and is the largest of the three islands with a land area of about 20 square kilometres.
The town itself is located on a narrow isthmus connecting the two 'butterfly wings'. The 2 sides of the island are vastly different in landscape. The eastern half is largely flat, while the western half is dominated by a chain of hills.
The proximity of Trapani Airport makes the island of Favignana remarkably accessible from the rest of Europe, though as yet this hasn't spoilt the island which is still relatively unknown outside of Italy.
