Research and Travel Grants
The Society welcomes applications for funds for the support of archaeological, documentary and antiquarian research within its fields of interest from:
* Students (see Wheeler Fund )
* Early career researchers (see Research Grants, noting the Joan Pye Award)
* Established scholars (see Research Grants, Jones Fund, Janet Arnold Award )
* Independent researchers of any age (see Research Grants )
Awards are made for:
* Archaeological and Antiquarian research (see Research Grants )
* British archaeology (see Research Grants , Jones Fund )
* Study of Western Dress (see Janet Arnold Award )
* Travel (see Wheeler Fund and Lambarde Funds )
Timetable
Deadline for applications: 15 January each year. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that references arrive by this deadline. Late applications or those with missing references will not be considered.
Applications considered by the Society’s Research Committee: early March
Applicants notified: by 31 March
Please note:
- The dissemination of the results of research is fundamental, and applicants are expected to be clear how this will be done in their applications. In addition, the Society may request short reports suitable for Fellowship News, SALON or on its web pages, and may invite the grant holders to give a lecture on their project.
- Projects should not start before 1 April in the year of application.
- Retrospective applications cannot be considered.
- Grants will not be awarded for the salaries of those holding current appointments, but the cost of additional staff, e.g. a temporary research assistant for new projects, may be considered in exceptional cases but only for named individuals.
- Grants will not be awarded to pay overheads.
- Grants will not be awarded for research that is part of work for a degree (except for the Wheeler Fund).
- Grants will be paid in pounds sterling.
- The Society does not facilitate the granting of visas.
- Successful applicants need to demonstrate that they have received all relevant permissions to undertake their project before the funds are released.
- Members of the Research Committee are debarred from acting as referees
