Manuscripts

The varied collection of about 1,000 manuscript series includes items from the tenth to the twentieth centuries and relates especially to antiquities, local history and heraldry. A catalogue has been published under the title: Catalogue of Manuscripts in the Society of Antiquaries of London by Pamela Willetts (Brewer, 2000).  Catalogue entries for the manuscripts are also available online through the National Archives A2A website.

The Society's own archives date from 1717 and include minute books, correspondence, papers read at meetings and proposal papers for Fellows. They were used extensively by Joan Evans for her History of the Society of Antiquaries (Oxford, 1956).  There is no published catalogue, but enquiries for further information can be addressed to the library.
